On methods

Artistic practice is based on the openness of methods, while the sciences define themselves by methods. Engineers seem somewhere in the middle. the orthodoxy of the scientific methods was criticised by scientists like Paul Feyerabend and Thomas Kuhn. Boris Groys writes, that contemporary art necessarily attempts to undo any self-definitions by using different methods. In this work i use the result of a scientific method, to provide a set of numeric data through the application of a simple image processing software. A DGGE gel of microbial DNA from samples collected outside Unist and 3 samples provided from lab digesters was the basis for various calculations, resulting in a set of visual data (image of the gel under uv light) was translated into sets of numbers which were then translated into sound by way of another algorithm, and both, the diagrams with data and the sound is played in a short video. This is very much a work progress, a process which could be expanded into many directions. It is a dirty way to sample an invisible but real substance of data, which also provides an endless loop of ready-made production from which any ‘end result’ is entirely eliminated and nothing ever happens.
